SD-WAN – What Is It, and How Does It Benefit Your Business?

Let’s discuss what SD-WAN is, what it possesses that drives many organisations to turn their heads towards it, and how it will benefit your business.

SD-WAN (or Software-Defined Wide Area Network) is an approach, which distributes the traffic that uses Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technology across WANs to find the best possible route for traffic flow among different geographical stations.

SD-WAN has become one of the most widely used networking technologies. In the past, a regular Wide Area Network (WAN) would be used to connect branch offices to a central corporate network, or to connect to remote data centres. These WAN connections would often rely on special proprietary hardware to function and operate. Unlike traditional WAN, SD-WAN is a more flexible and scalable solution that supports an increasingly remote and mobile workforce.

One of the main advantages of SD-WAN is that it increases operational bandwidth while reducing overall costs. MPLS bandwidth is expensive and incurs higher costs for deployment than other transport types. SD-WAN enables organisations to create a single network infrastructure with a variety of connection types, including MPLS, LTE, and broadband internet. This enables companies to route less sensitive data across cheaper public connections and thereby reduce their reliance on costly, private MPLS links.

Because SD-WANs are cloud-based, the IT team can control everything from one central location, allowing teams to quickly respond to requests without sending IT to a branch location. While onboarding a new office with WAN might take weeks or months, SD-WAN can be provisioned in days or even hours. This simplifies IT management with remote dispatching and rapid scalability.

Wide Area WANs are no longer an effective solution today, as an increasingly overwhelming volume of data is funnelled down an already overloaded MPLS network.

SD-WAN offers greater flexibility, visibility and control over your network while lowering costs. Ultimately, and most importantly, you are ensuring that your WAN is future-proof and cloud ready.

BitCo’s Cloud Security and SD-WAN products deliver a high-quality experience by maintaining a few simple principles, therefore avoiding threats to your network protection.
